Question: Laser vision - what about the future?
(Posted by: Bad Boy on 2009-08-25 03:19:39)
When you have laser vision they use a laser to cut away bits of the lens in the back of your eyes to correct it. If you had this surgery when you where about twenty five, what would happen when you are fifty, would it get worse or better since you have half your lens missing. I do not mean Laser Eyes I mean when you go to the hospital to correct your vision like you see on the adverts. |

The Laser does take part of your cornea, not you lens. For most people the reduction in myopia remains for life. At some time in their forties everyone starts to have problems seeing up close through their distance correction. People who have had laser vision correction have to start wearing reading glasses just like their friends that had never needed glasses until then. |

Personally, that would never happen and if It did you and I would be long dead. Edit: I thought you meant laser eyes like...Some superhero or something. You know red lasers coming out your eye and then burning through glass...Hah oops. And back to the question; I don't think much would change, if anything I think your eyesite would stay the same. |

Umm, I think it would depend on the surgeon. They usually only do it for early-mid adult ages. |

The future of early Laser treatment is not known and the people getting it done are the Guinea pigs for the future, i personally am not willing to take the risk. Good Q and good you have thought of this theory... |

They actually laser away cornea, not the lens! Laser correction will NOT stop your vision deteriorating - this will happen naturally anyway. What it does mean, is that if you have had laser correction in the past and your vision deteriorates 10, 20 years down the line then you may not be able to have it done again, as you may not have enough cornea left. |

Im not an expert on laser surgery but I do work in an Opticians so i can only tell you what I know. Generally laser surgery only corrects distance vision so with time and age you will eventually need glasses for reading. Now I heard a while back that there is laser surgery to correct a reading prescription but I also heard that this can only last for at most 3 or 4 years. Now with the advancements in technology that may have changed and maybe it may be more permanent but im not 100% sure. But as I said once you reach the age or 40 and over then your most likely going to need reading glasses. |

Hiya, i had lasik when i was about 21 and i'm now 33. So far they don't seem to have deteriorated and i'm still happy with them even though they haven't ever been perfect. I was told that i would probably need reading glasses when i'm mid 40's like most people would normally anyway because your eye naturally deteriorate due to age. My eyes were -7 when i had them done and my lenses were like milk bottles even with special lenses made thinner, so as long as they don't get that bad again i'm sure i'll still be happier then i was! |
